TRAINERS

1. When was the last time you bought a new pair of trainers?
2. Do your shins hurt after exercise, or do you get backache after running?
3. Do you use one pair of trainers for everything?

If the answer to 1) and 2) was over a year ago, you probably need a new pair of trainers.

If the answer to 3) was yes, you may need to re-think your trainer use.

Trainers are like the tyres on your car.  They get worn out, especially if your chosen sport is outside, or on a hard surface e.g. road running or outdoor tennis on an all-weather court.  Check the soles of your trainers.  They should have good grip.  If the tread’s gone, or worn unevenly, it’s time for a new pair.

The shoe should have good shock absorption, especially for explosive sports like running, aerobics, badminton and tennis.  Really you should have a pair of trainers for each different discipline you do.  This can be costly.  Buy a pair of good quality trainers and keep them for your exercise. Check the depth of the sole – this is where you are spending your money – the thicker the sole, especially the heel, the greater the shock absorber -  If you’re not sure, explain to the shop assistant what you want.  You may be advised to buy a pair of cross-trainers.  Cross-trainers are suitable for a variety of sports, but if, for example, you a serious road runner, buy a pair of trainers specifically for road running. Incidentally, if you are wearing your trainers unevenly you may need some orthotics. Better to buy a pair of last year’s style, if they will do the job, than to buy the latest fashion statement shoe that does not have the support and grip you need.  Do not wear them as everyday shoes.  This way they will last longer and serve you better.
